Choosing a power supply that will not become the problem

Every year we see machines come in with a failed unknown-brand power supply that has damaged something else on its way out. It is the least glamorous purchase in a build and the one we argue about most.

Wattage is about spikes, not averages

Modern graphics cards draw brief power spikes well above their rated figure, sometimes double, for a few milliseconds. A unit sized only to the average will trip its protection and shut the system down mid-game. This is why we size units with headroom rather than to the minimum that adds up on paper.

The efficiency badge is a proxy, not the point

An 80 PLUS rating tells you how much power is wasted as heat, which affects your electricity bill and how hard the fan works. It does not directly certify build quality or protection circuitry. It correlates with them, because manufacturers rarely put a good rating on a cheap platform, but the rating alone is not the guarantee people assume.

What actually matters

Look for the protection set: over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature and short circuit protection. Look at the warranty period, because a manufacturer offering ten years is telling you something real about the capacitors inside. And look at whether the connector set matches your card without adapters.

Modular is convenience, not performance

A fully modular unit lets you leave unused cables out of the case, which helps airflow and looks tidier. It does not make the unit more efficient or more reliable. Buy it for the build experience, not for performance.

Spend the extra here

Of every component in a build, this is the one where we most consistently tell customers not to save money. It is protecting a graphics card that costs many times more than the difference.
